Grinding the coffee lets off a scent of partially refined sugar, like demurara, accented by fruited hints of grape jelly and spice. The wet aroma is layered with caramelized sweetness, cooked berry, and a note of spiced fruit punch. Acidity is one of the first characteristics that hit me when drinking the hot cup. This coffee isn't a puckering bright coffee, but has a refreshing vibrance that comes off like brisk black tea, Earl Grey is what I wrote down, due in part to the overt spiced aroma that comes with it. I'm loving pour overs of my City roast, so crisp, clean, and with an interesting sweetness underneath that reminds me a little of Karo corn syrup. The coffee cools to hints of of sweet lime and green apple, and spiced aromatics of cardamom and cinnamon. I generally don't recommend roasting an expensive Kenya to 2nd crack, but I made the happy accident of letting a batch get away from me (never walk away from your roaster!) and was amazed by how much of the 'Kenya' character cuts through the intense roasty flavors. It made such a complex dark brewed coffee, replete with fruited sweetness that hinted at berry syrup, with this wild flavor profile of chocolate covered coconut and sweet cedar smoke in the finish. But it was an accident, and given the choice, I'd keep Gachenge to the lighter end of the roast spectrum. This description is from the cupping notes of our coffee importer, Sweet Maria's
