Ilomba is a sweet Tanzanian coffee with high-toned flavors that wake up the palate, and complex sweetness at a range of roasts. It's a great value too, as the cup profile finds parity with some of our moderately bright Kenya's, but the price does not! The ground coffee shows notes of raw sugars, and a buttery caramel note that brought to mind praline nut, along with a citrus hint. The sweetness in the wet aroma is potent, albeit weighted heavier on the raw sugar matrix than fruits. We found the cup profile to have very supportive underlying sweetness at City and City+ roast levels, with malty sweetness, like brown ale, accented by some spice on the nose, and bright citrus notes. City roasts are fairly vibrant, with some bittering in the aftertaste that pointed to grapefruit, and tannic tea. I loved the bright cups of both my City and City+ roasts, but also had really nice results at Full City. The cup sweetness held up to medium roasts, but also pulled out notes of toasted cacao, and dark chocolate covered coconut.
