Light roasts are tart and citric, like Kenyan coffee, and the sweetness has some unrefined aspects of coconut palm sugar. A grapefruit note adds to the high tones, as do tannic fruit tea notes in the aftertaste. Nice fruited espresso.

Product Description

Ilomba is the perfect coffee for lovers of high-toned flavors that wake up the palate, and complex sweetness at a range of roasts. It's a great value too, as the cup profile finds parity with coffee from Kenya, but the price does not! The ground coffee shows notes of raw sugars, red raisin, and fragrant citrus. The sweetness in the wet aroma is potent, albeit weighted heavier on the raw sugar matrix than fruits. We found the cup profile to be tart and sweet at City roast level, with notes of citrus accenting a nice supporting sweetness that has the slightly rustic profile of coconut palm sugar. When I cupped this coffee initially, I noted some tropical fruit hints, like musky papaya, and pineapple. However, I found the fruit notes to be a bit more buried in the background when drinking a pour-over brew. The cup was still fairly vibrant, with a grapefruit note accenting the sweetness. The tart citrus shifted to some tea-like tannic notes in the aftertaste too. I loved the bright cups of both my City and City+ roasts, but also had really nice results at Full City. And actually, we've recently been testing this coffee as espresso, both single origin, and blending, and think the interplay of complex bittersweetness and fruits works very well.
